How to fix hole in wall step-by-step – Standard Guide, applied for all wall repair situation
Time needed: 2 hours
Fixing holes in plaster requires you to be patient.
Note: the plasterboard need to be dried with heatgun. Otherwise, you need to wait for the plasterboard to be dry and it should take more than one day
- Step 1: Safety first
Make sure you wear a mask and goggles whenever working with plasterboard as it’s very dusty material.
- Step 2: Cut plasterboard
Measure & cut a square patch of plasterboard with a utility knife or saw, a fraction larger than the hole in the wall.
Use the patch as a template to mark around the damaged part of the wall, then use the keyhole saw to remove that area—you are, at this stage, making the hole bigger. Using your knife, cut a bevel around the front edge of the hole (a bevel is a 45-degree angle) and also around the front edge of the patch. - Step 3: Create a Backer
The patch won’t stay in the hole on its own, so we’ll create backers to attach it to. To do this, cut 2 pieces of timber (or similar material) roughly 5-8cm, depending on the size of the hole. Pass 2 wood backers to behind the hole, in a parallel position; then use a drill to screw the 2 pieces of timber into the wall to secure. This technique is similar to how to plaster a wall skill and can be applied to big holes.
- Step 4: Patching plaster
How to patch a hole in the wall? Using the patch of plasterboard, fill the hole and screw the patch to the backers; the two bevels come together here creating a ‘V’ groove around the edge of your patch which will be filled with jointing compound. Spread the compound across the entire repair with a taping knife, covering the seams, screw heads and any unevenness.
- Step 5: Sanding plaster
Once dry, use sandpaper over a block to sand it all flat. You’re probably going to need to go over it again and fill in some imperfections.
- Painting and finish
Use the roller to paint over the repairing wall area the first coat. Waiting for the plaster dry, then paint a second coat. After that, if the paint over the hole still does not match with the overall wall colour, you should paint one more additional coat. We recommend painting 3 coats.
We hope that the guide on how to fix a hole in a wall has help you could DIY wall repair in the most effective way. Otherwise, after a short time, the plaster would be drop or crack because it is not secured in the right way into the plasterboard.

If your timber framing is shrinking you may find that some of the nails that were used to fasten your plasterboard onto the framing have popped out. To fix this:
1. Drive a plasterboard screw into the stud 20 mm below the popped nail, sinking the head just below the surface.
2. Scrape away the loose paint and filler and drive the popped nail back into place.
3. Finish by covering the screw head and the nail head with premixed cellulose filler (e.g. Spakfilla), sand smooth and then paint.
